ARRIVAL OF 'TARANAKI' WITH THE ENGLISH DECEMBER MAIL

NEWS TO JANUARY 10. The N.-Z.S.N. Co.’s s.s. Taranaki, H. B. Francis, arrived in the roadstead at I p.m. yesterday, with the English Mail via Suez only,—theßakaia, with the Panama mail, not having arrived at Wellington up to the time of the Taranaki’s departure. Such of the news as we have space for will be found below. GENERAL SUMMARY. The Australian October Mails were delivered in Loudon on the 14th and 19th December. The Queen and Royal family are in good health, and are at the Isle of Wight. The accouchement < f the Princess of Wales and Princess Helena is shortly expected. Ministers’ intended poliey on the question of Reform is not yet disclosed. It is believed that there is a division in the Cabinet, and that Mr. Disraeli and Lord Stanley advocate bold measures. Lord Craubourne and the Conservatives oppose such measures. A stormy session is anticipated, end a change of Ministers and probable dissolution are anticipated. A Royal Commission has been formed to enquire into the state and working of the neutrality laws. The Fenian movement is paralysed. Numerous arrests are daily occurring, and a largo quantity of arms have been seized. The Habeas Corpus Act remains suspended. Archbishop Cullen has issued a pastoral letter condemning Fenian movements. Irish Reform League is agitating for manhood suffrage and the ballot. It is reported that the Queen intends visiting Ireland, and when the country is settled a Royal sojourn will be distinctly fixed.

There hare been several fearful colliery explosions, one at Barnsley in Yorkshire, by which 300 persons were killed ; another at Hanley, in the Potteries district, j by which 100 persons were killed; andj another at Bohon, by which 60 peraonsi wire killed. The fame that precedes these talented artistes leaves us no doubt that a crowded house and an enthusiastic reception awaits them on their opening night, as also a successful season. The character selected by Mrs Poole to appear in is that of Leah, which, if we are to judge by the opinions of our northern and southern contemporaries, is a masterpiece both in conception and exo cution ; and, ably an ported as these ta lented artistes will be by Mr. and Mrs. Newton, Mr. Kemp, aod Mr. Seymour, we have no of their success.
