The brigantine Balmoral, Capt, Roberts, left Hobart Town on the 2nd inst., and arrived here early on Tuesday morning last. She bad a fine run to Cook’s Straits; since then experienced a succession of contrarv winds and calms.
The cutter Hero, Captain Joiner, from Lyttelton, with a cargo of flour, cheese &c., arrived here on Tuesday lust. • She was six days coming up, having experienc'd very light winds and calms. The cutter Mahia, Captain Baxter, from Blackhead, with a cargo of wool, arrived here on Tuesday evening last. The s.s. Lord Ashley is due here from Auckland on the I.3th February, and will leave for Southern Ports the same day with the Suez mail —it being two days sooner this time in consequence of February being a short mouth. The s.s. Kaikoura will leave Wellington for Panama on th Cth February, with the European and American mails.
The schooner Success, Captain Frost, arrived here early this morning from Auckland, which port she left on Saturday last. Had light baffling winds up till Monday last. Rounded the East Cape on Tuesday, and bad northerly weather from thence to port. Saw a schooner on Monday hound north. By the Success we have full files of papers up to Saturday last, but must reserve extracts for a future publication.
Arrival or H.M.S.S. Brisk at Canterbury. This fine steam corvette, 1C guns, 230 ho-so-power, 1',057 tons, and commanded by Capt. Charles W. Hope, arrived and brought up off Rhodes’ Bay at l-4o on Wednesday, She left Wellington on Tuesday at noon, and during her passage down had fine weather, with heavy beam sea during the night. At an early hour in the morning it was known that this vessel might bn expected. The Artillery had received offleial information that their services would be required to salute. Detachments from Nos, 1 and 2 batteries were told off for (his duty. No 1 battery took up a position at Officers’ Point, and No 2at Naval Point. The first detachment was under the command of Lieut. Byrne, and the second under Captain Ritchie, On passing the shipping the Ensign dipped her ensign, which was responded to by the Mermaid, Matoaka, and Gleninark. On bringing up, No. 1 battery saluted with seven guns with excellent precision; this was taken up by No. 2, and duly acknowledged by her Majesty’s man-of-war Brisk, with the same number of guns. Shortly afterwards, Captain Hope came on shore in bis gig, and proceeded over the hill to Christchurch.
