DEATH AT WAIPAWA.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES. *slh, There is a report of rather a strange character in circulation in this place, to the effect that on one day during fhe past week , a person was killed in our neighborhood, white in a state of intoxication, bya fallfrom his horse; ami Hint he was buried without any inquest being held on the body. If i Sir, there be, as I believe there is, good foundation for this report, I think that attention should he directed to what seems a gross irregularity, to the end that such be not repeated. I send you the report as if is current amongst us, and if it should be incorrect in any particular perhaps you will afford space to any other partyto give the necessary correction. • It is said thud the deceased, J. Chase, a half, caste, had been drinking at the Tavistock Hotel until Host Goodwin refused to supply him with more liquor, as he had already had “ enough;" that he then managed to mount his horse and ride a few yards from the door, but could not keep the saddle, and fell off, being killed on the spot, or, as others say, injured so thal he died soon after; that the Coroner, aware of the case, thought it unnecessary to hold an inquest on the body, and suffered il to he burned without inquiry—why is of course a mystery. I trust I hat. the publication of the above in your valuable journal will bring the report, to the notice of the proper authorities, and that something may be done at least to prevent/he recurrence of such questionable neglect on the part of a public officer.—l am, sir. Tours, fa., Argus. Waipawa, Vlth January, 1867. [_The above communication only reached us on Monday last, after the publication of that day's issue. —Ed. H. B. T.l
