Nehaka Eeseete. —This day, at noon, the Commissioner of Crown Lands %vill submit to competition, in the Council Chamber, 17 agricultural sections in the Nuhaka District, known as the Nub aka Reserve. Total Weeck of the Schoonee Eclipse.— This fine schooner, the property of her master, Captain Philip Levy—who, it will be remembered, rescued the Rev. Mr Grace from captivity amongst the Han-haus at Opotiki, after their barbarous murder of the lamented Yolkner, —has, we are sorry to learn, been cast ashore at Nelson, and completely destroyed. By this calamity Captain Levy seems to have lost his all, and we find that the people of Nelson have taken in hand the matter of raising a subscription for his assistance, which we trust and believe will be liberally responded to. Particulars of the wreck, as gleaned from the Nelson papers, will be found in our shipping column. Shbmaeine Cable. —By the arrival of the St. Hilda, we are informed that the testing of the caat the shore end of White’s Bay, was found to be satisfactory. A station is to be established at Kaikoura, and Mr Smith the operator returned in that vessel with the necessary instruments. This station has been established for making any repairs that may be required, and will, without doubt, prove beneficial to the working of the line.—Wellington Independent, 13th December.
The p.s. ‘Huntress.’ —This little ressel arrived at Auckland on the 12th inst. We take the following with reference to her future employment from the Daily Southern Cross, 13th December Our Wangarei friends will be glad to learn that the paddle-steamer ‘ Huntress,’ which arrived yesterday in charge of her owner, Captain Heed, of Poverty Bay, is to be put on the Auckland and Wangarei trade, to supply the place of the * Tasmanian Maid.’ The ‘ Huntress' possesses accommodation for 500 sheep and 30 or 40 head of cattle, besides her passenger accommodation. The Panama Sebticb. —Advices from Sydney (says the Independent,) and private letters from Mr Crosbio Ward, are not quite so satisfactory as could have been wished. The Government of New South Wales has not gone very heartily into the joint arrangement between that colony and New Zealand for bearing the cost of the Panama Service ; but the following from the New Zealand Advertiser, 12th December is six days later than the above;—We are pleased to learn that the negotiations between Mr Crosbie Ward, as accredited agent of the New Zealand Government, and the New South Wales Government has progresed favorably. All the matters in question between the two Governments have been arranged satisfactorily, with the exception of one relating to the manner in which the amounts received for postage nre to* be appropriated between the contributing Colonies and that question is only in abeyance in consequence of Mr Ward deeming it necessary to communicate with Government before finally deciding. We understand also that the New South Wales Government has agreed to stand in the same position towards the Panama Company that the New Zealand Government does, by which the latter Government will be relieved from all responsibility towards the former incase of failure in the service. It is probable that Mr Crosbie Ward will proceed to Melbourne as accredited agent of this Colony at the fort be >ming conference on the postal service?, the date ■. f which is pot yet fi*etU *
