WAIROA.
[FEOM OUE OWiT COKttESPONDEST.]
Friday, 7th Deo., 186 S. TnE p.s. ‘ Sturt,’ Captain Fairchild, arrived here at four o’clock this morning. Major Fraser and his men were all' landed by seven o’clock ; and at half-past seven the ‘Sturt’ steamed for Turanga. There is no other news of any importance. OvEEEAOT) EiiOJI W.AIEOA TO POVEETT BAS'.— Sometime ago Mr Towgood and Major Fraser made a bet of £SO aside that the former would not ride from Wairoa to Turanga within twentyfour hours, and with only one horse. During the last month Mr Towgood accomplished this feat—having left Wairoa about 2 a.iu., and arrived at Turanga at 9 p.m. He thus had five hours to spare, I believe the Major has to stand a dinner for five, this being part of the bet.
