Hawee’s Bat Voittkxeeb Aetiixeet.— A meeting was held in the Council Chamber on the evening of Tuesday, 23rd October, at seven o’clock, for the purpose of forming a Company of Volunteer Artillery, His Honor the Superintendent in the chair. The Chairman said that the past few days bad show* the necessity of forming such a corps as the one proposed. The Province of Hawke’s Bay had shown that it was prepared to carry out the principles of self-reliance j and the zeal and energy displayed by its settlers in the trying circumstances in which they had been placed reflected the highest credit upon them. He hoped that with the prisoners recently deported to the Chatham Islands they had seen the last of this rebellion in this district, but this Province was not so secure from invasion that such a step as the one now contemplated was unnecessary. Mr M'Lean concluded amidst great applause. Mr Buchanan said that he was gratified to see so many present whom he had also seen at Omaranui; and he was proud of the services they had done the Colony. The Government at present could not afford the expense necessary for an institution of this kind, and therefore the men would have to assist them. The principal item of expense would be the guns, which he thought should he light ones. He did not wish any one to join who could not afford the necessary time for training. Mr Buchanan concluded by stating that he was not going to leave the Eifle Volunteers (loud cheers.) The names of twenty-eight persons willing to join the corps were then taken, and the meeting dispersed after passing a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
General Assembly or Presbyterian Creech. —We understand that the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church will meet at Auckland on Wednesday, 28th November next. The Rev, Peter Barclay, of this town, will, we believe, conduct the opening service. This gentleman, it will be remembered, was moderator of the last assembly.
Gazette. —A Provincial Government Gazette was issued on Tuesday last, 23rd inst. It only contains a proclamation by bis Honor the Superintendent, revoking a proclamation previously issued, which directed the officer in command of Napier Regiment of Militia to call out for actual service such men as might volunteer for that purpose j and ratifying and confirming all acU and deeds lawfully done by the said officer or in obedience to his orders in pursuance of the said proclamation.
The Rebels. —During the past few days it has been reported that the rebels under Tamilian a collected on the south-eastern part of this island were in force on the borders of this Province, near Porangahau, threatening a descent upon the town. We need scarcely say that the authorities have been on the alert—several messengers having been despatched in the direction of the reported camp for information, but none of them had returned at the time of oar latest enquiries yesterday afternoon.
