' Pbotiscial Coukcxl. —In consequence of a portion of our staff being taken off for drill during the last two days, and .-n.idry other causes, we are compelled, though reluctantly, to withhold tho greater part - of our report of the proceedings iu the provincial Council. Such of it, however, os wo have been able to get iaio type, will be found in another place. The Wanganui Times has the following remarks on self-imuoaed taxation :—Our readers will see from a tabulated statement of the revenue for the quarter ending JOih Juno last, that the total amount is £i07,586, and that we import tobacco, spirits, wins, and beer to the estimated value of £1,074,561 per annum, a sum considerably over £2O per head for every European, man, woman, and child in the colony. Of course the native population consume a.fair share of those articles, but the question is, what do they cost the colony ? Add to tiio estimated value the actual retail price paid by the consumers ; and add to that the expense incurred by tho supprssion and punishment of crime arising out of the use of intoxicating liquor’s, and the total amount self-imposed taxation will be something frightful to contemplate. The consumption of ardent spirits at home as been estimated at —for England, two gallons per annum ; for Scotland two and a-haif gallons, and for Ireland two and a-quarter gallons; but the con, sumptioii in lids colony, exclusive of the produce of illicit distillation is over six gallons a head, including the one hail - of the native population.
