PETANE.
[peoh oxnt OWN cossespondent.] Wednesday, 26th Sept. Pebhaps if the editor of the ‘Hawke’s Bay Herald’ knew everything that the natives are doing at the present time, he would not think the “ sensation heading,” as he terms it, altogether uncalled for. We must give the natives their duo, for they are not the poor, ignorant people they wera at one time. Moreover, I have not the slightest doubt that they are, even at the present moment, hatching some grand scheme to lay waste the Province of Hawke’s Bay ; and I think that wc cannot be too vigilant just now. The Titiokura natives are even cutting up their saddles to make cartouch boxes. The slur attempted to be castou the ‘Times’ is quite uncalled for. At the same time, I sincerely trust that there is no danger to any person in the province.
