Eaethq-ctake.— A smart shock of an earthquake ■was felt at -Napier at 5-30 this morning. Bain.—Large quantities of rain have fallen up the country during the past week. The fall in ■Napier has not been so great, but last night there were some very heavy showers. Hobaut Tows. —We have to acknowledge the courtesy of Captain Valentine, of the ‘ Balmoral,’ in famishing us with files of Hobart Town papers to the Bth inst. We regret wo cannot favor our readers with any extracts this issue. Attckiand.— By the ‘Star of the South,’ from Auckland, our dates are to the 20th inst. We must, however, reserve extracts for a future occasion. A few shipping notices will be found in their proper place.
Inland Mail Contracts. —lt will bo seen by advertisement elsewhere that the General Government invite tenders, receivable at the Chief Post Office, Napier, up to noon of Wednesday, the 31st October next, for the conveyance of mails between certain places within this Province, for the period from the Ist January, 1867, to 31st Dec., 1867. Waieoa. —We have intelligence up to .Friday last, 21st inst. A correspondent, under that date writes:—“There are two rooks in the centre of the entrance to the river which are quite visible at low water... Bands of armed natives are prowling about in every direction...A native was tried here the other day, before S. Deighton, Esq., K.M., for stealing £4O. He was committed for trial. You may expect him in Napier in a day or two... The ‘Hero’ is outside as I close this.”
We have to acknowledge receipt of a copy of a book, entitled “ Betsy Jane Ward, hur book of Goaks,” price Is 6d, published by George Bobertson, 69, Elizabeth-street, Melbourne. In a future issue we will notice it at greater length.
Cheap Flottb. —We observe from Hobart Town papers of the Bth hist., that flour was quoted at £l3 per ton. Would not speculators find it worth their while to get a cargo over P
Candles. —Belmont sperm candles, we observe, can be had in Auckland for la per lb. Napier folk have to pay Is 7d ! Gazette. —By a Provincial Government Gazette published on Wednesday last, but which did not reach our office till Thursday afternoon, wo observe that the meeting of the Provincial Council has been postponed from Tuesday, 25th Sept., to Wednesday, 3rd October, at three p.m. The same gazette likewise contains a notification that Samuel Locke, Esq., of Napier, has been returned to serve as a member for the Town of Napier ia the Provincial Council of Hawke’s Bay,
Pexboleu is. in WEllington. —The Independent intorms us that a gentleman writing from the Wairarapa, in that province, says : —“ A discovery has been made here which may turn out of great importance. From a hul on Mr Cameron’s run, vVarehama, a small stream bubbles up, which has a strong smell of kerosne. The kerosene can be lighted with a match, and burns freely.” We (independent) believe a qualified person from Wellington will be sent to examine what, wo hope, may turn out to be a genuine petroleum spring! A large quantity of the mineral constantly oozes irom the hill.
