THE SOUTH.
We have our usual files from the several provinces, but we regret to say that we are unable in this issue to present our readers with extracts. The most important, or at any rate the most pleasing intelligence from the South by the present mail is that of the completion of the laying of the submarine cable that now connects the Northern and Middle Islands of the Colony...A daring attempt at escape from the Dunedin Gaol*has been made by two young men named Langlands and Hobson. They were detected, and the former shot dead ; the latter was wounded in the leg... Burgess, the murderer, is engaged in writing his life. What a tale of horror it will be !
