DISTRICT COURT AT HAWKE’S BAY.
(To the Editor of the Advertiser.) Sis, —May I beg space in your open co lumn for a few remarks on the objection made by our member, Mr J. D. Ormond, in the House of Representatives, to the introduction of the District Court into this Province. Sir, it is almost with astonishment that one reads of the hon. member objecting on the score of expense to the Province : expense to the Province. eh! yes, that must have weighed heavily on the miud of the lion, member, as it has perhaps on former occasions, when a new office was about to be introduced, more particularly if such ofilce might afterwards be filled by a relative or friend. Sir, just the expense of the District Court, could be provided by abolishing the generally considered overpaid, and almost useless oifice of troviucial Auditor, and probably, the hint being given, the hon. member may use his exertions in the House to set aside that office; if not to meet the expense of the District Court, at any rate as another proof of his zeal for encouomismg ex ■ penditure iu our Province, nous verons. Now, sir, for a few remarks as to the desirablity of this District Court ; tit present we have, say—the Inferior slid Superior Courts : iu the former, decisions are dispensed ; oh, well, at a moderate charge ; but in the latter Com t, and where it is satisfactory to have any important question decided, ou account of the deep attention aud strict impartiality shown to all by his Honor Judge Johnston many ore deu-rred from entering on account of the enormous charges. Wo have, therefore, say—first, a cheap and inferior article ; second, a very expensive out superior article. Whereas, in the Distiict Court, with an able Judge and an extended Jurisdiction, wc should expect mi approach to the high quality of lha second, at a moderate advance on the cost of the first. To tire advantages of the District Court would be added the knowledge to all of a Court, ably ptesiucd over, ociug within reach, at a moderate cost, in eases of appeal. I hope, sir, we shall yet see the District Court introduced here, notwithstanding the objection of the hon. member Mr J. D. Chmond; and this desire the hon. member will find shared hi by other of his constituents and inhabitants of the Province. 1 am, &c., Pjujbiax. Napier, 13th August, lit>6. (
William Thompson.— lf William Thomn-rs aspects to get back the Waikato, by petition;:-.> Parliament, ho will find himself mistaken. H. wever, acting on the principle “ that those who a, u a siik gown may chance to come by the sleeve ( ,t it,” he has addressed a petition to Parliament, vindicating himself for the past, and demands;i ' redress for some alleged grievances. It is probable that Thompson, without getting back the Waikato, may take something by his motion, —Wellington Independent, llih Augu-t.
