The Government, paddle steamer Sturt left Jell Wellington on the 12th rust, at2a.ni., a strong N.W. wind blowing at the time. After rounding Cape Palliser, the wind gradually drew into the N. 8., and blew with great fury for a time, during which she anchored under a reef off Fiat Point. On the 13th, the weather having moderated weighed anchor and proceeded on her voyage. When off Castle Point a very heavy squall from the land struck the vessel and carried away the head of the foremast at the hounds of the rigging. At 0 30 a.m. passed Cape Kidnappers, and at 3 a.m. came to an anchor in the roadstead, after firing a gun to give notice of her arrival. At 6 a.in. tired a second gun for the Pilot to go off, and at 7 a.m. entered the Iron Pot. The Sturt has a large cargd of flour, potatoes, and other goods, which she will land at the principal planes on the Coast, beginning at Wairoa, oil her passage to Auckland. It is much to bo regretted that there are not in Napier sufficient tradesmen to do the necessary work required by ships belonging to the place and other vessels calling in which mayhave sustained accidents at sea. At present such vessels are forced to go to Auckland or Wellington to have the damage repaired. We learn that the Sturt will get a new foremast on her arrival at Auckland, and wo observe that the Mahia cutter has still a fished boom. Surely there are plculy of trees about Napier sufficient to make such spars, without going out of the Province to huy them, especially when there is a boat-builder in the place, who might answer tbe purpose of block and most maker for a time. ARRIVAL OF THE LOBE ASHLEY. The pANgA Co.’s s.s. Lord Ashley, Captain Gordon Poastmby, left the’ Queen-street Whad,

Auckland on Sunday, the 12lh August, at 10T5 a.m.; proceeded down the harbor with a strong N.W. wind and thick weather; brought up at Rangitoto at 11T0 a.m.; at 12 - 55 again proceeded, had a strong and heavy head sea to Tauranga ; arrived off the mouth at 2 a m. on the 13th; hove to till daylight for the pilot; at 7 a.m. landed mails, passengers, and cargo ; and at 930 a.m. weighed anchor and steamed for Napier. At 3-15 p.tn. passed White Island, at 9 30 rounded East Cape, and had fine weather from thence to Napier, where she arrived at 4 p.m. on the 14th. At the time of leaving Tauranga she was compelled from the strong sea running to bring the pilot to Napier. He will probably return by the Sturt.' , MISCELLANEOUS. The ketch Secret sailed for Nelson in ballast on Monday last, 13 th inst. The schooner Joanna, with a cargo of cattle, sailed for Auckland on Tuesday last, about noon. The s.s. Beautiful Star, with sheep and cattle, steamed for Auckland about eight o’clock on Tuesday night last. The cutter Eagle, for Auckland with cattle, sailed on Tuesday last. The s.s. Lord Ashley steamed for Southern Provinces yesterday afternoon, conveying the mails for England via Suez. The schooner Lady Bird took her departure for. Wairoa yesterday, with a large general cargo, and three passengers. The ketch Hero sailed yesterday with general cargo for Mohaka and Wairoa. The p.s. Sturt steamed out of the harbor last evening for Auckland via the Coast. The cutter Lady Wynyard was taking in cattle for Auckland yesterday afternoon, and will probably get away to-day. The cutter Agnes, with cattle for the Auckland market, is expected to leave this day. Tiie schooner Saucy Lass, which vessel arrived here on Sunday night last, cleared at the Customs yesterday for Auckland via Mahia, and will probably leave during the course of the day. The s.s. Wellington may be expected here from the Southern Provinces on Saturday next, ISth inst., and will leave for Tauranga and Auckland on Sunday, the 19th inst., at noon. With reference to the bodies of the two natives that were recently found on the Wairoa beach, and which were supposed to be the bodies of iho two men who formed the crew of the ketch Sailors’ Bride, our Wairoa correspondent informs us that “one was eaten very much about the stomach; that the other had both eyes eaten out; and that there was a large tangi over the bodies before they were interred.” He adds : Ido not think any European body was thrown on the beach. I think (iiat report is without foundation.”
