[To thß Editor of the Hawfcs's Bay Times.]
Slß,—l should like to ask a question through the medium, of your valuable paper, viz..—How is it that a road has not been laid off down the Petane Valley before tins ? It is now nearly twenty years since this place was first occupied, yet we cannot boast of a cart road or foot path from the echoolhouse to the Petane pah, all through a whimsical old man, formerly known as Old Paddy,” but lately as “ Uncle Tom,” having cut up the old road with wire fences. The path that we are at present using is very dangerous on dark nights, both to pedestrians and equestrians. Such a state ol things ought, 1 think, to be looked into: but the Government are generally very slow in join" anything for this district. Hoping that wo may shortly have a foot path at least free from any nuisance such as we have at present,—l am, & c ., A Wandeees. Petane, 24th July, ISCG.

Sm, —I have always understood that we had an Inspector of Weights and Measures in Hapier, but the following case of light weight will convince you and the public generally that that functionary (if wo have one) does not do his duty, or else we have no Inspector at all. The case I wish to bo known is this .—On Saturday last the baker served the people whore 1 lire with three loaves cf bread. On my ai riving at noiuo the bread was shown to me, and I made the remark that I did not think iki*y " Cie the ligm weight. I immediate*v went and weighed them in (lie presence of four people, and tlu-y only weighed five atid-a-half pounds, which was a half pound short in throe*loavcs! How, Mr Editor, 1 think the Inspector should do li’a'duty to the public, end let the bakers know that tiu’j cannot rob their customers with impunity. —I am, &c., A PniEXD TO THE BAKES. Hapier, £3rd July, 1£0C ! ,
