TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE.
{By luter-prOTmcial Telegraph.) Nelson, 11th July, 325 Yesterday the town was startled by the announcement in the Colonist that Sullivan bad confessed to over twenty murderers, committed on the West Coast. The Colonist stated that the most shocking part of Sullivan’s confession, which was only learned late last night, was the number of murders which have been committed by this infernal set. Sullivan has acknowledged • that more than twenty men have been murdered on the West Coast, and robbed by the crew to which ho belongs. lie can certify to more than tw'enty, but how many more it appears he cannot say, for he is unable to recollect the exact number. The blood runs cold at his confession of sanguinary deeds. Sullivan has also stated that Levy, who had conscientious scruples against shedding blood, was the man who used the rope and strangled the victims whom it was bis e business to kill. Burgess and Kelly, says the same authority, had no such scruples; they employed the pistol or any other means that killed their man. Doubts were expressed regar ding the accuracy of the statement that Sullivan bad made such a confession, but further inquiry made to-day not only established the statements, but showed that the numbers are under the mark. It appears that the number of victims is more nearly thirty than twenty, and that the greater number of them were killed on the read between Hokitika and the Grey, and generally buried iu the sand. Great excitement is felt in Nelson.
7’2 5 p.m. Sullivan is to be examined as approver before the Resident Magistrate to-morrow. His revelations will be appalling. Among others will be the account of the murder of a woman on the West Coast, who was first most brutally used by Burgess and theothers, and then killed. Sullivan is not the Sullivan who was tried in Otago. Special information has been received in Nelson by the Colonist from one who knew Sullivan in Koorong. He arrived in Hokitika only about three months ago, and was intending to go back to Melbourne, but bad weather kept the steamer and he fell in with Burgess and his gang. He was down south as far as Okarita, and was there about the time the bank robbery was committed. The General Government is anxious to have the murderers tried at Wellington, lest they should not get a fair trial in Nelson. The Nelson people are afraid they would escape on the way. The evidence against them will be overwhelming. 12th -July, 3 - 55 p.m. The murderers were brought up again today. The evidence given was that of Golloway, who met them on the road an hour before the murder of the old whaler. They were remanded to the 20th, when Sullivan will be put in the witness box. He states that Burgess had told him that he and Kelly had murdered a great number of men on the West Coast.
