Sudden Death of Dr J. M. Bateson.— It is our melancholy duty to record the sudden death of Dr John Moses Bateson, which took place at the Shamrock Hotel, on Tuesday, the 12th June between 1 and 2 p.m. The deceased gentleman had that morning between 10 and 11 o’clock ridden in from Clive, and was sitting at dinner in the Shamrock Hotel, when he was seized with a fit, and expired on the spot. On Thursday, the 14th, an inquest was held on the body, before Dr Hitchings, coroner, and a jury, when a verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony, that the deceased died from serous apoplexy. From the medical and other evidence adduced it was evident that this was entirely caused by the deceased’s habits of intemperance. The remains of the lamented gentleman were conveyed to town the same day (Thursday.) and interred in the Church of Euglaud Cemetery- —the burial service being conducted by the Rev. Dr Saywell. Ahuriri Plains. —The leasing of sections in the Papakura and Hikutoto Blocks, Ahuriri Plains, took place in the Council Chamber on the 28th ult., —Mr Janisch being the auctioneer. The bidding was very spirited throughout the day—all the sections being disposed of. The total area in both blocks offered for lease amounted to 3,835 acres, 3 roods, 27 perches, which was put up at an annual rental of .£1,175 7s 6d. ’The amount actually realised was £3,617 ss, or £2,341 17s 6d in advance of the upset price. The General Assembly.-—Messrs. D. M'Lean and J. D. Ormond, the two gentlemen who represent this province in the House of Representatives, and Colonel Whitmore, M.L.C., took their departure in the steamer * Wellington 5 for the capital on the 29th ult., to be present at the opening of the General "Assembly, which event took place on the following day. His Honor the Superintendent of Auckland, and several other members of the General Assembly were also passengers-by the ‘ Wellington.’ The Friendly Natives.—We have received from several distinct sources accounts of the conduct of these people on their return to Wairoa. They seem literally to have stripped the pas of the Hau-hau natives of everything movable by way of loot. Great dissatisfaction is felt by the natives so treated, and we believe that they are about to lay their complaints before the Government with demands for compensation. Important Discovery,—-A correspondent in the Waiptikurau District has informed us that two salt springs have been discovered upon a hill a few miles south of that place. A sample of the water —supposed to possess medical qualities—has been forwarded to the General Government for analysis. There is good reason to believe that the discovery will prove of importance to the district.
