FIRE AT TARANAKI.
(From the Herald, 9th June.) We regret to state that a fire broke out early this morning in the store of Watty and Co., which was completely destroyed. It was first seen about 2'30 a.m., hut by the time assistance could be got it had gained too great a hold to be stopped. The adjoining house, lately the native office, was soon enveloped in the flames, beyond hopes of saving it ; fortunately it was empty. A small store belonging to Mr A. Hood, between his large store and the native office was pulled down, and thus the fire was prevented from spreading in that direction ; but both this large store and Mr W. R. King’s were only saved by strenuous exertions of the people present.
The small military fire engine was brought upon the ground, and did good service in preventing the spread of the fire, but the want of a properly organized fire-brigade was much felt. Nevertheless a party of 50th soldiers and several townspeople gave valuable assistance.
Messrs Watty and Co. are partly insured —the store for ,£IOOO, and the goods for £SOO, but they will be heavy losers; their Milner’s safe and its contents being the only things saved. Mr Hood was not insured we believe.
