(From tlie Sydney Morning Herald.) MELBOURNE. May 22. The import market is very brisk. There is an active demand for flour. Adelaide, town, brought £l7 10s, The stock of Moyne Mills cleared at £ls 10s. Victoria, country, sold at £l6 to £l6 10s. Califrrnian realised the same figure. Wheat much inquired for. Sales—Adelaide brought 7s Gd, and damaged Chilian 6s 7d to 6s 9d per bushel. The entire cargo of the Sarah March was sold privately, but realised equal to 7s per bushei on terms. There have been large sales of barley at 5s per bushel. Oats are firm at 6s 9d per bushel. Maize is dull at 5s 6d to 5s 9d per bushel. Candles are enquired for, but a difficulty is experienced in effecting sales at auction. There is an active movement in JDKZ geneva. Sinclair’s haras and bacon realised Is 8d per lb., duty paid ; bottled fruits brought 10s per dozen in bond.. There have been sales of woolpacks at 4s 6d, of brewing sugar at £4l, and white crystals at £44. The Waterlily’s cargo was cleared at auction. Teas are in great request. Half-chests realised Is B|d per lb., iu bond. At the trade sales Is 7d to Is 10d per lb. for common medium congous were realised. Prime beef is worth 37s 6d per 100 lbs. Fifty-sis lb. wethc- s are worth 22s 6d; 50 lb. ditto are worth 20s.
A. K. Smith, engineer, has been elected a member of the City Council, in the room of the late Mr Kelly. The Council has addressed the Acting Governor, requesting him to compel Ministers to collect the outstanding bonds and Customs duties, and also to bring the Immigration Act into operation. It is doubtful whether the Council will pass the Appropriation Bill till assured that the duties will be collected. May 24. The new Postal Act comes into operation on Ist of August. It reduces the rate of postage to 2d. The Board of Inquiry have acquitted Mr Connor, master of the Industrial. School, of the charges of immorality preferred against him. Mr Charles Wintle, son of the governor of the gaol, was killed last night by a fall from his horse on the St. Kilda-road. Mr Verdon sails in the mail steamer, and will be entertained at a public breakfast on Monday. Air Black is not making progress with his mail arrangements. The weather was favorable for the review of volunteers. The Levee was well attended. Arrived —Rangitoto, from Otago. Sailed —Don Julie, for Batavia; Lady Darling, for Hokitika. May 25. It is reported that General Carey insists on the collection of tea and sugar bonds, and if this is the case the Ministry will probably resign. Photographic forgeries of £1 notes are iu circulation. They were made by a youth in a photographic office in Swauston-street, who Las been arrested. Dr Beany’s case still goes on. Mr Parkes is iu town.
The Presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church, which has been investigating certain charges brought agaiusfc the Rev. James Henderson, yesterday announced that the investigation was suspended in consequence of the special difficulties of the case. The import market is less active. The Jean Baptiste’s cargo of Mauritius sugar was sold by auction at prices barely sustaining the market; while crystals sold privately at £43 to £44 lUs. Breadstuffs are firm, though quiet. Tasmanian is close on £l6. The Eliza Corrie’s cargo of Chilian wheat has been sold at a shade under 7s. Large sales of barley have taken place at 5s 3d to 5s fid ; maize, 5s 3d; oats are stored for 6s. May 27. Mr Parkes visited Pentridge yesterday, and he is to have an interview with the Chief Secretary on the Border duties question. The collection of the bonds for Customs duties has commenced. General Crrey, it appears, insisted on this course being taken; and the Ministers, with the exception of Mr Higginbotham, gave way. The Acting Governor also insists on the amount of the Supreme Court judgments in the tariff actions being paid over. A north-easterly gale set in last night, and clouds of dust overwhelmed the town until rain set in. No business doing. May 28, Destpatches Lave been received from Mr MTntyre. In March last he was on the Clencarry River, actively engaged in searching for traces of Leichhardt. In an action brought by the owners of the Petiola against the owners of the steamer City of _ Launceston, in which the former sought to recover damages for loss by a collision between the two vessels, the jury gave a verdict for the defendant. The evidence proved that the persons in charge of the Pcnola were alone to blame. The Governor has issued his warrants for the payment of the amount of the verdicts iu the tariff actions by Eckroyd, Stevenson, and Dalgetty. The Ministers threatened to resign, but his Excellency said it was his duty to see that the law was obeyed, and that he could do without them. Messrs Verdon and Payne are passengers in the R.M.S. Bombay. A prospectus of a new salt-making company has been issued. Western Port Bay is named as the locality where the operations of the company are to be carried on. The summing up of Judge Barry in Dr Beany’s case was considered unfavorable to the prisoner. The jury, after they bad retired, came into Court, and inquired whether they must find him guilty of wilful murder or acquit him. Intelligence has been received here of the wreck of the barque Ellen Simpson, near Cape Howe, with the loss of nine lives. The share list of the Commercial Bank closes on Thursday. The import market is active. There have been numerous small safes of Adelaide flour at £l7 to £l7 10s; wheat is dearer, there being no sellers under 7s 9d, and for Port Mac Donnell 8a is asked. There have been large sales of Californian on private terms. Sales of oats have been effected at 5s fid. Maize is lower, sales having taken place at ss. The Isabella Brown’s cargo of barley has been placed at ss. Rice is moving off at £27, and there have been sales as high as £2B. Blasting powder is wanted, 6|d having been refused for Lochfyne. Kerosene is duli. Marion’s bulk ale is quoted at Bs. Malt is lower, and has been sold at 14s 9d. Sales of candles are reported at Is 7d, duty paid. Arrived.—lleigate, from Loudon; Pursuit, from New York. Sailed.—Esther, for Sydney; Aurifera, for Calcutta; Bombay, R.M.S., for Guile via King George’s Sound. The steamer Hero arrived in time to put the supplementary mail on board the Bombay. May 29. The Ministry have not resigned. The jury in Beany’s case were discharged this morning, as they could not agree,' there
being nine for acquittal, and three for conviction. ’ The Crown intends instituting a second prosecution. The missionary ship John Williams takes a number of rabbits from Barwon Park to liberate on the South Sea Islands. The Assembly is now discussing the case of Williams v. the Board of Land and Works. The English, Australian, and New Zealand Insurance Company has been floated. Import Market. —Breadstuffs have improved ; wheat is firm at 7a 9d for Adelaide; oats are quoted at 5s 3d to 5s 6d ; barley, 5s to 5s l|d ; maize, ss; cornsacks, 14a 9d to 15s; sarsaparilla is in good enquiry; Machin’s stout ranges from 13s to 14s; there have been large sales of sugars, and candles have also been dealt in. In the cattle market, Dalmahoy, Campbell and Co. report that 1500 head of prime cattle have been yarded, and brought about 20s per bead higher ; others stand at about last week’s rates. Nine thousand sheep have been offered; prime wethers brought 22s 6d. Arrived.—Cecilia, from Batavia; Gleemaiden, from Liverpool; Mary Grant, from Adelaide ; City of Adelaide (s.) from Sydney, May 30. A deputation from the Exhibition Commissioners waited on Mr Parkes to-day. The import market is dull. Large sales of sugar have been made at an advance of 25s per ton all round. There have also been some sales of Chilian flour at £l4 10s on short terms; Port Mac Donnell wheat is quoted at 7s 9d; and woolpacks at 4s 6d. A strong westerly gale is blowing, with rain. May 31. The Legislative Council passed the Appropriation Bill last night. A message was read from the Acting Governor to the effect that he intends to prorogue Parliament tomorrow. Air Aliller moved that the Council adjourn till the next day, but there was a count out; consequently it will not meet till Tuesday next. The Public Health Bill was lost. The application for shares in the new Commercial bank far exceeded the number required. The list closed to-day. The import market is quiet. In breadstuffs, however, there has been more activity. Sales of Duffield’s, Hart’s, and Alagarey’s flour have been made at £l7 10s; sales of Chilian have also taken place at an advance on prices paid a few days ago. There is nothing doing in wheat; 7s 9d is asked. Oats are dull at 5s 3d to 5s 6d ; barley is steady at 5s to 5s 3d; and maize has been sold at 4s. Adelaide bran, Is lid to 2s. Rum is active. Currants, 7d. Oilmen’s stores are also active. Sales of kerosene have been effected at ss. Arrived. —Hermione, from New York ; Winifred, from London ; General Cobb, from Adelaide ; and Burke, from California, —her cargo consists chiefly of oats. There is a large ship off the Otway. From Anger Point information has been received that the ship Jeddo, from Surinam, bound for China with coolies, was set on fire, and 260 of the coolies perished in the flames. June 1. Parliament was prorogued to-day. The President of the Legislative Council and sixteen members attended, although the House was not formally constituted. The Postal and six other Bills received the Royal Assent. The Viceregal Speech rejoices that the sad results some persons anticipated from the new tariff had not been realised.
An old miser named Mills, who lived in the loft of a store in Flimlere-street, and slept on rotten blankets which be brought to the colony tw« nty-seven years ago, died a day or two ago, and has left over A 10,000 in cash, and real property to the value of £100,000; he is thought to have sent home a will bequeathing his property to his sister. The Welsh concert last night for the benefit of the Hospital was a great success. The Governor and Mrs Carey were present. The import market is quiet, though the arrivals have been considerable. There is ao change in flour, and wheat has been inquired lor. The foreign cereals arriving are freely bought up. Haif of the cargo of the James Yiucombe, from California, changed
hands to-day at prices sustaining the market ; the remainder will probably be sold this afternoon. Maize is firm, sales having been made at 5s 2d. There are 53 entries for the Melbourne Cup, and 14 for the Ascot Yale Stakes. Arrived—James Yincombe, from San Francisco ; James Cheston, from Boston, with lumber. June 2. No business transactions worth recording have occurred to day. The Copper Mining Company commences in Gipps Land ; the first produce is expected to arrive at Port Albert in about a fortnight. The American actress Fanny Brown appears at the Princess’ Theatre on Monday, as Mazeppa ; the opera season also commences on the same evening at the Theatre Royal. Mauritius dates to the 25th April have been received, but there is no news of importance. Arrived.—Labang, from London ; Glentill, from Glasgow; Fairy Rock, from Batavia. ADELAIDE. May 25. The Jane Bell has arrived from Mauritius, and brings news to the IBth April. A hurricane had visited the island, and had done some damage to the cane. Sugars, suitable for the colonies, were very scarce, and in active demand. No whites or yellow crystallised to be got; good yellows, 6 dollars, 75 cents —very scarce. Only two vessels were loading, one for London, and one, the William Clowes, for Sydney. Yesterday was observed as a close holiday. The Governor’s levee and ball were numerously attended. A considerable quantity of wheat changed hands at 6s ll|d to 7s; small sales of town brands of flour have been made at £l6 10s; country, £l6. May 28. Judge Boothby has written to the Court of Appeal, refusing to give up his notes in the case of Copeland v Wiutzell; the Court consequently adjourned sine die. Mr Stow intends making Judge Boothby’s late conduct the subject of a petition to the Governor. Wheat is firmer; a considerable quantity changed hands at 6s HJd to 7s. Flour is unaltered. May 29. By a Gazette extraordinary. Parliament is convened for the 15th June. With reference to the alarming relations between the Supreme Court and the administration of Justice, Mr Justice Boothby, at the sittings of the full Court to-day, read 15 reasons for bis refusal to deliver up his notes to the Court of Appeal. In only one case that came before the Court was Justice Boothby’s decision reversed; the rest of the prisoners stand over till the next criminal sessions. Wheat is readily saleable at 7s, and holders are not disposed to sell it at that rate; flour is firm at ,216 10s for country. May 31. The office of valuator of runs has been offered to the Hon. C. Bonuey, and refused. Eight hundred invitations have been issued by the Mayor of Adelaide for a banquet on the opening of the new Town Hall; they embrace all classes of the community, to make it thoroughly representative. Candles are worth Is sd; currants, 6d. The cargo of sugar, per Jane Bell, is to be offered at aucticn to-morrow. Wheat is offering at 7s, but there have been no transactions ; flour is nominal at ,£l6 to £l6 10s; bran, Is 91. June 1, The lease and machinery of the Old Exchange Gold Company has been purchased by a new company, to be called the National Gold Mining Company, who intend thoroughly to work the quartz reefs on their property. The Government have paid over £IOO compensation to returned members of the Northern Expedition. Sales of large parcels of whea thave been effected at 7s ; at the port a parcel of town brand Hour sold at a price which has not transpired.
