Mirage.—The Canterbury ‘Press’ gives the following account of a mirage near Christchurch. J.he place mentioned, Weed on’s, is some seventeen miles from Lyttleton : —“ A very extraordinary instance of this phenomenon occurred lately at at Weed on’s. Prom the lawn of Mr Tuckey’s residence, the whole of iho vessels in port were distinctly to be seen, many other objects being visible, but not so distinct. The illusion had a very pleasant appearance, and, after lasting for about bali'-an-hour, gradually faded away. We are informed that on one or two previous occasions, a similar mirage has been seen in this locality.” Death of a Native Chief at Kaipaea. —On Friday, May 31st, the well-known chief Tamiiti Davis died. The deceased suffered long from a swelling over the temple, and for the past six months has been living with the “hot water” fanatics, or “tea-kettle tribe,” at Pntatahi, they professing to cure him with the power of steam. They failed to cure poor Davis ; and it would be hardly fair to say they killed him. However, he d dn’t get better under their treatment. He returned to Paitai, near the South Head, about a week ago, blind, lame, and speechless; and died on the 31st ultimo as I have said. Tjio deceased chief was a loyal native, and was highly ihou-dit of by the Europeans. Es; cei-;!!j in the’matter of Euarangi did be show Ins trienriiy disposition. Davis was a member of the Wesleyan communion, and was a worthy man.—Correspondent Daily Southern Cross.
