The Colonial Government paddle steamer ‘Sturt,’Captain Fairchild, steamed for the East Coast at midnight on Saturday last, 9th inst. She will call in at Wairoa, Opotiki, Tauranga, and other places on th e Coast. From Tauranga she will convey to Opotiki some men belonging to the Ist Waikato Regt, to relieve a detachment of Taranaki Military Settlers. These latter the ‘ Sturt’ wdil then take on board, and proceed to Wanganui,—calling in at Napier on ber way down, Capt. Percival, Paymaster of the Colonial Forces, proceeded in the ‘ Sturt,’ having with him, it is currently reported, wherewith to pay the gallant fellows who have been engaged in the East Coast campaign. Another gentleman who proceeds in the ‘Sturt,’ is Captain Cadcll (the pioneer of the river Murray, in Australia), who will, at the request of His Honor the Superintendent, examine the entrance to the Wairoa. and give his opinion as to the most advisable method of making it available for vessels to enter. Captain Cadell is a gentleman of considerable experience, and his opinion will } therefore, he valuable. We really trust a way will be found to clear the mouth of the river ; for should the present state of affairs continue, people wdio Lave recently bought land, and taken up their residence there, will be disgusted, ami it will also

deter others from settling there—for who would go to live in a place where the common necessaries of life can be procured only with uncertainty or difficulty ?
