The Hawke's Bay Times, Published every Monday and Thursday. "NULLIUS ADDICTUS JURARE IN VERBA MAGISTRI." THURSDAY, 7th JUNE , 1866. NAPIER WATER SUPPLY.

Aktesian Wells, as we have on a former occasion remarked, have proved successful wherever they have been tried in the colony. Those in the sister Province of Canterbury seem, from the latest accounts to hand, to give far more than sufficient for the wants of the settlers, and the overflow was becoming so great as to necessitate the adoption of measures for its conveyance to the sewers, and we believe that we in Napier are as favorably circumstanced by nature for the success of the experiment as they are in the Middle Island. It is unfortunately too well known —for it is a subject that comes home to all . the inhabitants of the town —that for the past eighteen months Napier has suffered very seriously from the deficient supply of this prime necessary of life; and even now that what we might reasonably suppose would be the wet season has arrived—the summer having departed from us—-we still wait in the vain expectation of a fall of rain, or for anything more than a moderate shower; while for almost every purpose water has to be purchased, and even then, from the hardness of its quality, it is often found totally unfit for its required use. Amongst all the questions to be considered by the Provincial Cc unci! during its approaching siftirig,’ this question' is second iu importance to, none, whether regarded from a sanatory point of view or any other that may be chosen. The lime has come when the town must have its needs in this direction regarded, and the sooner the better, as the occurrence of a great fire or the outbreak of disease in our midst would too surely demonstrate. We do trust that the Council will provide means for the purpose of an experimental boring, in order to. set the question at rest, and that the Executive will lose no time in following up the work. Once demonstrated, there is no fear but that private enterprise will carryon the work, and Napier, instead of being without water, .will become as well off in this respect as any other place in the colony.
