Commercial Summary.

* Times’ Office, Wednesday Evening, 6th June. The market has been slightly eased by the supply of goods in demand by the arrival of the two vessels Danish Beauty and Shelburne, the former of which arrived early in the month, and the latter towards its close; but the supply by no means meets the demand. All the articles previously reported as scarce and dear—as candles, sugars, currants, &c.—remain much as they vi ere at our last report, and the prices then quoted are maintained, with slight variations or reductions. The trade with Sydney has been maintained, and the price-of coal has in consequence fallen, superior qualities being now retailed at from 46s to 50s per ton. An unusually large number of sheep has been exported during the month; this has, however, chiefly been done in order to stock the recently opencd-up country in the neighborhood of Poverty Bay. Besides some half-dozen trips of coasting vessels, conveying in the aggregate about 2500, two trips have been made by the s.s. Thane for this purpose. The same vessel also deported a large number of sheep and cattle for the gold-fields on the West Coast about the middle of the month.

■The winter season having now set in, we find a considerable impetus given to the trade in soft of which class the market is in fair supply, a large consignment having just been landed from the s.s. Auckland, and which we believe will be brought to the hammer by the enterprising importer, Mr Doitsh.

Provincial Government Gazette. —A G-a-zette, published on Friday, 18th inst., contains the notification of the return of "William Colenso, Esq., to the Provincial Council; and an abstract of receipts and expenditure for the quarter ending 31st March.

Earthquakes.—lt would appear that earthquakes are becoming quite common just now. Lately we noticed that a slight shake was felt in Wellington and Picton—in the latter case shaking a house off its blocks; now we have record that four distinct shocks were felt in Canterbury on the 2Cth, and one iu .Napier on Friday night last, about 8 p.m.
