VALPARAISO.
Bunstee’s Valparaiso Freight Circular of February Ist gives us the following items in regard to the Spanish hostilities : —“ On the eve of the departure of the last mail steamers, the Spanish vessels of war blockading the port of Caldera—the Numancia, Berenguela, Marquez de la Victoria — together with their prize, the British steamer Matius Cousine, arrived at this port. Previous to abandoning Caldera, the Spaniards despatched to Spain some two or three of their prizes, laden with ores, &c., and set tire to and destroyed the rest (eight vessels), after stripping them of everything. Yesterday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish squadron issued a decree declaring all Chilian coal as contraband of war, even under the protection of neutral flags, until such time as his Government may otherwise direct.” The same authority adds the following in regard to freights :—“ Transactions in charters have been very numerous during the past fortnight, with a further advance in rates. The market still continues very firm, with several orders still unexecuted.”
