THURSDAY, 17th MAY, 1866. THE LATE AND THE COMING ELECTION.

“ NULLIUS ADDICTUS JURAKE IHi VERBA MAGISTEI.”

The electors of the town whose votes effected the return of Mr Colenso to the Provincial Council on Friday last will observe that that gentleman returns his acknoAvledgments through the medium of our advertising columns in this day’s issue, and they will see Avith satisfaction that he accepts the trust again reposed in him, and returns to his accustomed seat to Avatch over and Avork for their interests as heretofore. Much as we, with many of his friends, regretted the step he felt called upon to take in resigning that seat, we are hoav fully convinced of its Avisdom, for although it was beyond doubt involving the risk of strengthening the Government party, and thereby Aveakening, or perchance destroying the opposition, the opposite course Avould ha\’e given the other party great advantage over him, and he must have submitted to great humiliation as if he was retaining his position after forfeiting the confidence of his constituency. Now, however, the case is altered. His having thrown himself upon the electors, and being returned by them voluntarily, has immensely strengthened his hands for good, and silenced all who might be disposed to cavil at him. It now remains for the electors to follow up the work they have begun, and further strengthen his party by returning another good and true man to fill the yet vacant place. That such a one will be found Ave have no doubt. Meanwhile all will do well to remember that the Nomination Day is fixed for Tuesday, the 22nd inst., and the Polling Day for Wednesday, 23rd inst.
