NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES FOR THE ELECTORAL DISTRICT OF THE TOWN OF NAPIER. The nomination of candidates for the representation of the Town of Napier in the Provincial Council, in the room of j. M. Stuart, Esq., resigned, took place, according to advertisement, in front of the Government Buildings, at twelve o’clock on Thursday, the 10th inst. At the hour of twelve, there being no attendance, a bell was rung, which had the effect of collecting an audience of seventeen person, when The Eettojting Offices read the writ. He then asked if any one present had a candidate to propose. Mr W. Reaedon proposed Thomas Kennedy Newton, Esq., as a fit and proper person to represent the town of Napier, in the room of J. M. Stuart, Esq., . . Mr W. Mix-use seconded the nomination. Mr P. Seaeles then proposed William Colenso, Esq., as a fit and proper person to represent the Town of Napier in the Provincial Council, in the room of J. M. Stuart, Esq., resigned. Mr T. Edwards seconded the nomination. Mr W. Reardon was then called upon by an elector to speak in favor of Mr Newton. • The RETuasniG Offices : Have you nothing to sajt in favor of your candidate, Mr Reardon ? Mr Reaedon : No, thank you. The Rettjbkieg Offices : , Perhaps his seconder may have something to say. Have you anything to say in favor of your candidate, Mr Miller ? Mr Milles : I don’t think it is necessary. Mr P. Seaeles said that it was not necessary for him to say much. Mr Colenso was well-known and respected by 1 the electors; and as for Mr Newton, he was only too well-known to them. The Rexuening Ofeicee called for a show of hands, with the following result:—Newton, 4; Colenso, 2. He then declared the show of hands to be in favor of Thomas Kennedy Newton, Esq. Mr P. Seaeles and Mr T. Edwasds then demanded a poll on behalf of Mr Colenso, which was granted, to take place between the hours ’of 9 and 4 on Friday, when the state of the poll to be declared at its close.

THE POLLING.

The polling, as notified, took place on Friday, between the hours of 9 and 4 o’clock, and, at its close, the Returning Officer stated the numbers to be—Colenso, 31; Newton. 27 ; and declared William Colenso, Esq;, to be duly elected. Mr P. Seaeles then, as the proposer of Mr Colenso, briefly returned: thanks on his behalf. He said the electors would find him, as they had found him before in that Council, ® the right man in the right place.” The proceedings then terminated.-
