News of the Day.

The Peotinciai Council.. —We observe from the advertising columns of the ‘Herald’ that T. K. Newton, Esq., once more places himself before the electors of Napier as a candidate for the seat vacated in the Provincial Council by the resignation of J. M. Stuart, Esq.,—this time, no doubt, in the sure and certain hope of being re* turned. Eekaxuii. —In our last issue wo published an advertisement intimating that Mr Chas. J. Pownall, of Auckland, has applied for letters patent for the treatment and preparation of flax. That adver* tisement was dated “ 30th April, 1864,” whereas it should have been dated 30th April, 1866. We reprint the same advertisement elsewhere in a corrected form, believing that, were we not to do so, the error referred to might be the cause of some annoyance to the parties concerned. Resident Magistrate's Court. The only case since our last was that of Wood t. Barty, on Tuesday last. Plaintiff sued defendent for £2 14s. Judgment confessed for amount claimed and 7s costs. Customs Receipts.—The Customs Receipts at the Port of Napier, for the week ending 80th April, amounted to £1,897 Is Id, —being £36(4 18s lOd in advance of the receipts last month.
