WELLINGTON.
THE PTJECHASE OP THE MANAWATH. The ‘ Independent,’ of Thursday last, 26th inst. says:— “ As considerable interest has been maifssted among all classes of the community, regarding the recent negotiations at Mannwatu which hare attended with such complete success, we are collecting, from reliable sourcess, materials for a fuller account of the native meeting than has yet appeared. Before the public interest subsides, therefore, we hope to lay before our readers a detailed report of a meeting, which certainly marks so important era in our local history. Wo learn from the coast, that Mr Buller, E H,, having obtained upwards of one hundred signatures of the chiefs and leading men of the three tribes principally concerned, to a memorandum of agreement 1 affirming the sale, has returned to Wanganui, and that the natives have dispersed to their respective homes. For nearly three weeks, Mr Bui- . ler’s labors have been of the moat incessant and harassing kind, and he will no doubt be glad of a little respite. Meanwhile, the deed of cession will, we understand, be prepared with all due care. When ready for execution, it will be carried through the district for that purpose: after which a day will be appointed for a meeting of all concerned at Pare.wanni, in the Lower JRangitikei, when the purchase money (£25,000) will be handed over to chiefs nominated by their tribes to rccivo it. The question of distribution will be left very much to the natives themselves, but Dr Featherston and Mr Buller will remain at the meeting to assist the tribes with their counsel and advice. The occasion is likely to, prove as interesting as it will be important.”
