AUCKLAND.

Br recent arrivals, our files extend'to the 24th inst. We make a few extracts:— THE COKDEirSED MAOEI TEISONEE3. Speaking of these, the ‘Now Zealand Herald,’ 24th April, says:—“No information has as yet been received at the Goal, as to thefate of these condemned convicts. Judging by appearances, they do not themselves feel any very weighty sense of their situation, for since they have become more familiarised to the interior of, a prison, they are more chatty, they nod familiarly to the gaolers and visitors. They are allowed tobacco as firstclass convicts, which (hey enjoy very much during their midday recreation, sitting in a circle. 'They really look very singular in their close-cropped heads, canvass trousers, and heavy irons. The pieturesqueness of savagery is taken out of them completely. They are divided into two divisions, one the Protestant Maoris, tho other the Eoman Catholic Maoris. They constantly carry with them their testaments and reading books. Solomon tho prophet does not seem to be a very popular seer amongst them, for he takes his position outside the magic circle. Ho sits quite apart. It is’ not probable that anything certain will bo known before tho Governor shall have consulted personally his responsible advisors in Wellington as to their fate.”
