IS ative Meeting. —Tho ‘Wanganui Chronicle, 1 * 17th March, gives the following account of a larg®native gathering at Turakiua on Wednesday, the 14th. March : —Mr Duller, R.M., held a largemeeting with the natives-at Turakina on Weduesday last, for the discussion of the Manawatu purchase, Tne whole of the Ngatiapa wei’e present, together with most of the leading men from Wanganui. The korero lasted till evening, but nothing definite was arrived at beyond a unanimous declaration in favor of the sale, and the determination to have no reserves in tho disputed block. After soma discussion as to price, tho principal chief, Aperahama Tipae, handed the Commisioners a slip of paper, naming the amount agreed upon among themselves, and signed by himself on behalf of the tribe. The price named was a very modest one to commence with, viz.—Nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine pounds, nine shillings and nine pence !! Then followed a number of speeches to prove that this was a very fair and reasonable offer. After this came the second offer, viz.— Ninety thousand pounds; and before tho meeting broke up they talked about forty thousand pounds. This wa understand is a fair illustration of the way in which Maoris conduct a bargain. We understand that there will be a largo meeting of tho Ngatiraukawa and Rangitane at Manawatu next week, at which both Dr Featherston and Mr Duller will be present. The Fenians. —On Wednesday morning, (10th January), between eight and nine o’clock, tho police secured 300 pikes at a house in Blackhallrow, Dublin, of which sixty-six were fully fitted with ash handles twelve feet long. They also found a number of carpenters’tools evidently used in making and fitting on the handles. They arrested on the premises a man named Brown, a barber. The shop was rented by a man named Tracy, at whose residence in New-street the police found concealed sheets of copper, weighing 3£ cwt., supposed to be there for tho manufacture of percussion caps. In the absence of Tracy his wifo was arrested. The two prisoners were brought up before Mr M'Dermott later in the day at tho head-office. Evidence of the discovery having been given, they were remanded. A telegram received on Wednesday afternoon states that twentyone Fenians, fully armed with revolvers and other weapons, landed that morning at Sligo, and were immediately arrested. Great alarm prevails in the town. Charles J. Kdckham, one of the three members named in the paper called the “ Frazer Document,” who were to form the executive of the Irish republic, has been found guilty, and sentenced to fourteen years’ penal servitude. The Reform Bile. —We believe tho outline of the Government Reform Bill has been prepared, and submitted by Earl Russell to the Cabinet Council held at his official residence, Dovvningstreet, on Wednesday. It would, of course, be unreasonable to expect any positive announcement with regard to the details of a measure which must as yet be regarded as under consideration. But the friends of Reform have, we believe, reason to hope that the scheme will prove to be uncomplicated by any details which might hamper its progress through Parliament, and we venture to predict that the positive assertion recently made by a contemporary as to tho high rate of the county franchise to be adopted, will turn out to be unfounded.—Star. On making up their books to the termination of the last year, the banking firm of Messrs Prescott, Grolo, Cave, and Co. celebrated the centenary of the establishment of their bank, which was opened on the Ist of January, 1766,
