[To the Editor of the Hawke’s Bay Times.J Sib,—l would desire to make a remark or two with regard to the election that is just past. Mr M'Lean has been returned by a very large majority, which takes no one by surprise, net even, I make hold to say, the most staunch supporter of Mr Colenso himself. That genflemrja would have done well to have retired before the contest, as ho was advised to do, and thus have saved himself so miserable a defeat. Laying all bad feeling aside, let us now watch the part M r M'Lean will play in the political drama about to be commenced; and if he shows by his actions in the House that he has the wellbeing of all classes in this province at heart, I for one should be sorry to say one word against him. On the other hand, should he fail in his duty, let him bear in mind that we have other and good men that we can send in his place, one of whom might have to-day occupied the very position of Mr M'Lean himself, had not the egotism of defeated candidate prevented his nomination. A dissolution of the New Zealand Parliament, in my humble opinion, is not far distant; perhaps he present one may last eighteen months. Let us, therefore, watch events, and act our parts honestly to ourselves and to our fair province and when the time comes, and a good man is found whose honesty we can all depend upon then, Sir, let our motto be, “ Shoulder to shoulder.”—l am, &c., AN INDEPENDENT ELECTOR.
