AUCKLAND.
By the s,s. ‘ Beautiful Star,’ Capt. Morwick, which arrived early on Thursday morning, we have Auckland papers to the 12th inst. The elections for the General Assembly had terminated. All the members returned have pledged' themselves to give their support tcT the Stafford Ministry. The trial of James Stack (formerly in the 65th Kegt., and well-known in Napier) for the murder of Mrs Mary Finnegan and her three sons, at Otahuhu, had come to an end. The trial lasted three days, at the conclusion of which the jury returned a verdict of guilty —a verdict winch was commended on all sides; —and the prisoner was sentenced to death. He did not, it would seem, evince the slightest emotion upon hearing it passed upon him. The preliminary examination of the five Maoris charged with the murder of Mr Volkner had terminated. They were committed for trial.
Flour had fallen to £2O per ton, in consequence of heavy arrivals from Chili. This has slightly affected our flour market, reducing it from £3O to £2O, —which, however, we consider rather high yet. A most daring burglary and assault was committed on the morning of the Bth inst. His Excellency the Governor was at Kawau at latest dates. The ‘ Eclipse ’ was to go down for him on Thursday. We see that the report of a fight near Napier had been brought into Auckland by Captain Stuckey, of the cutter ‘ Bittern,’ to whom it had been told by three Hau-haus at Open Bay. We have, it would seem, to go from home for news.
By the s.s. ‘ Queen,’ which arrived here at ten on Friday morning, we have one day’s later news, but there does not seem to be much news of importance. They contain a few Australian items, which we give below.
