A Yaihable Nugget.— The Queensland Guardian, of the 2nd of February, says :—“ One of the passengers by the City of Brisbane, steamer, yesterday morning, took with him to Sydney a lump of gold, weighing SSJ ozs. 10 dwts., and valued at over £1,900. The weight was so great that it had to be cut into two before it could be weighed at the Custom house. Tee E Ecr.NT Gold Discotcsy is Soutitlaitd —The Southland limes, of the 12th ulfc., contains the following hirer from a correspondent at itiverion, dated 11th February, respecting the recent gold discoveries in the vicinity:—i have just learnt from Sergeant Horton, who some time since, under instructions from Commissioner Weldon, proceeded to ilie reputed new diggings at Colne Bay (dir Hurst’s station) shirty four miles from Tiverton, that be found several men* at work, and ell appeared fully satisfied with the result of their labors. One man showed him about. J lb of gold, being his share for less than one month’s work. The gold is very fine, only with much difficulty obtained, owing to the rough appliances now used in separating it from the black sand in which it is found. It is stated that, with the use of quicksilver any man on these diggings can earn from £5 to £6 per week. The diggings are about three miles front the beach. There are six inches of washdirt found, on a false bottom at about one foot from the surface. There appears to be about seven miles of auriferous country, and from the accounts received several creeks hare been tested and gold found ; also many spots on the beach with a similar result. The road front Biverton is very bad. I understand that a sample c£ gold taken from one of the claims now being worked—a dishful of siutf—has been forwarded to Invercargill. Accounts received from Lougwood are, also, highly encouraging.” The Moa.—The Medical Times states than an egg of the gigantic extinct New Zealand bird tha Dinornis, is creating much discussion in scientific societies in England. From the report of the discovery of the egg contained in the Medical Times fra notice that the egg is the one some time exhibited at Messrs Bethuas and Hunter’s Ex-.' change building.—Wellington Independent.
