MARITIME NOTES. ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. ST. HILDA. The Government s.s. St. Kilda, Captain Kennedy, arrived here on Tuesday morning last, I'rom the East Coast. She Bailed from this place for IVairoa on Thursday, the Sth inst., for the purpose of embarking 75 men of the 3rd Comply of the Taranaki Military Settlers for Opotiki, which, after a delay of several days outside of the har on account of the heavy surf, she was enabled to accomplish, and Balled for Opotiki at 7"30 p.m. on Thursday, the loth inst. Arrived at Poverty Bay at, daylight on Friday, the 16th, but was obliged to leave about B*3o a.m. on account of a strong souther setting in. Arrived at Opotiki at noon on Saturday, the 17th, —leaving at 8 p m., after having landed the men in safety. Arrived at Awanui at 10 a.m. on Sunday, the 18th, landed stores, and remained there until 6 p.m; when she steamed for Poverty Bay, at which place she arrived at 5 a.m. on Monday, the 19th. Left again at 9 a.m., called at Wangawai, and arrived here as ahovo. She brings no news of importance. ARRIVAL OF THE SCHOONER CLYDE. The schooner Clyde, Capt. Cheshire, from Auckland via Wnugapoa, with a cargo of sawn timber, arrived in Ahuriri Roadstead at ten o’clock on Tuesday night last, the noth Inst. She left iVangapoa on Tuesday, the 13th last., and made a run of thirty hours to East Cape. From thence to port had light head winds; and arrived here as above. She brings a full cargo of limbar, consigned to Messrs. Miller and Lindsay. A boat accident, which, we regret to say, resulted fatally, occurred while the Clyde was lying at iVangapoa, by a boat belonging to that vessel capsizing. There were two men in the bout at the time of the occurrence, one of whom met with a watery grave, ARRIVAL OF THE SCHOONER 3IAKY JANE. The schooner Mary Jane, from Hokitika, arrived here yesterday afternoon, atter a inn of nine days from that port—having left ou Monday, the 13th hist, oho comes in ballast, miscellaneous. The V., N.Z. and A.B.M. Co.’s s.s. Lord Ashley, Capt. Vorsp, is due here on Saturday next, 24th inst., from Southern Ports. The N.Z.S.N. Co.’s s.s. Lady Bird, Capt. Kraeft, may be expected here from Auckland, on Saturday next, the 2-ith Inst. The schooner Vivid, Sehon, master, arrived here from "Wairoayesterday morning. She was towed out of the river by the p.s. Sturt. The schooner Elizabeth Maty left IVangapoa the same cay as the Clyde; and may, therefore, be hourly looked for. The schooner Success, Capt. Frost, leaves, we understand, for Dunedin in a few days with a cargo of wool. The departures, since our last, have been but two—the Beautiful Star, s.s., for Auckland, with another full cargo of sheep, and the Bittern, cutter, for Auckland via the Coast, _ The General Government Gazette of the 30th ult. republishes a notification issued by the Victorian Government, giving the true positions of the Antipodes and Bounty Islands, as ascertained by Captain Norman, of H.JLC.S. Victoria, during his recent search for shipwrecked persons. Captain Norman declares Antipodes Island to be in latitude 4a-42 S.; longitude 178-43 E. Bounty Island, “ a mere group of broken rocks, with outlying dangers, is in latitude *7-50 S.; longitude 179 E.
