The Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1865. THE ENGLISH MAIL.

Again we are doomed to the disappointment of the non-receipt of the European mail in its due course, and it appears for once to be owing to no accident, but to a cause that must have been foreseen by the contractors, —the inability of the steamer employed to convey the mails from Suez to Guile and King George’s Sound to maintain a sufficient rate of speed to enable her to accomplish the distance in anything approaching to the contract time; —but, thanks to that triumph of modern science, the electric telegraph, we are enabled to receive an abstract of the principal events in advance of the mail itself; aud, indeed, up to the 2nd November, being some days after the departure of the mail. Our Auckland contemporary, the Daily Southern Cross, in a second edition on the 23rd inst., has given us the telegrams referred to from the Sydney Morning Herald, which will be found in another part of this morning’s paper. The death of Lord Palmerston came like a shock upon the British nation; for, although the news last month informed us that he was ailing, we believe nothing serious was apprehended, as it was suppi sed to be but a temporary affection, and not likely to result in death ; but his work was done. The remaining items of intelligence does not call for special remark from us.
