Original Poetry.

THE NGAIO TREE. SE NEATH a branching Nsraio Tree, Just as the sun was setting, One summer eve sat Bosa Lee, Musing, sighing, fretting. And why, beneath the Ngaio Tree, Is pretty Bosa fretting; While down into the dark blue sea The ruddy sun is setting f What makes her tender heart so grieve That tears o’erflow her eyes ? What makes her snowy bosom heave. With such unwonted sighs ? Alas, alas! ’Tis sad but true, And known through ail the dell, That Bosa does her promise rue. To wed with Willie Bell. Both Bose and Will had schoolmates been, And time, as it flew past, Confirmed their childish preference. And made them lovers fast. It was beneath this Ngaio Tree, With leaves of constant green. That Willie Bell to Bosa Lee Said something sweet I ween. And oft you might have m et the pair, A-wandering by the stream; When in the sky the moon shone fair. And bright stars lent their gleam. But Bose and Will have quarrel’d now. As lovers sometimes do; "The course of love is seldom smooth,”— An adage old and true. Now Will has to the diggings gone. Or, some say, to the sea; And this is why Bose mourns alone, Beneath the Ngaio Tree. Te lovers young, my song I ’va sung, But add, by way of moral; Strive hard to curb th’ unruly tongue. Or you T 1 be sure to quarrel. West Eangitikei, 1865. C. M. H.
