East Coast Mail Seetice. —We gather from the fact that Mr Stafford has as advertised for one mail steam service only after the Ist of February on the East Coast, that the Colony is for the future to have merely a seven days’ course of post between the Provinces, instead of five, as has been the case for the last twenty months. Surely this is a matter deserving the consideration of the mercantile community, and that might be thought sufficient to awake into activity the dormant energies of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. At all events, on behalf of the public, we cannot avoid expressing our regret at the decision of the Government, and think on every point, political as well as commercial, it is a mistake, and hope some mode of letting Government understand that such is the opinion the public of this part of the Colony, at least, entertain on the subject. Perhaps the approaching political meeting would not be an inappropriate place to get an expression of public opinion on this matter. Public meetings nbw-a days are scarce articles, and advantage should be taken to elicit opinion on questions of interest whenever practicable.-—New Zealand Advertiser, December 15. Lieutenant-Colonel Gorton. —lt will be in the recollection of our readers that Lieut.-Colonel Gorton recently proceeded to Melbourne fer the purpose of obtaining an appointment there in connection with the Volunteers, and for which purpose he had been sent for by the Government of Victoria, It appears, however, that he did not consider himself fairly treated at their hands, in 6 ".isoquence of certain demands which he could not assent to being made, and the gallant colonel declined the offer, and returned to his old pastures Dv the s.s. Albion. He left again in the Storm Sira last evening, and will re-assume the eomthe Militia and Volunteers at Wanganui.
