Death by Drowsing at Auckland.—Captain Stanton’s Body Found.— The N. Zealand Herald of the 28th ult. says:—“ Tho sad event we surmised in a former issue has proved but too true in respect of tho fate of Captain James Stanton of tho brig Emma Prescott, his body having been found yesterday morning floating near the North Shore. It appears that Mr John Holmes, shortly after nine o’clock next morning, observed an object drifting towards the new ferry steamer Enterprise. It was soon discovered that it was tho body of a man, and a boat was put off containing Mr John and Mr A. F. Paton, by whom the body was picked up and conveyed to tho beach near the naval depot. Information was at once sent to town. The water police were at onco despatched to the North Shore, who, in company with Mr Woolley, agent for tho Emma Prescott, at onco recognised the body as that of Captain Stanton, who had been sometime missing. Tho body was placed in a shell and conveyed to tho dead house in Official Bay. An inquest will be hold this day, at one o’clock, at the Bailway Terminus Hotel In the pockets of the deceased were found a one pound Bank of Now Zealand note, No. 58,984, half a sovereign in gold, seven and six pence in silver, and a penny in copper j a letter addressed Captain Stanton, brig Emma Prescott; also a new pocket book, containing several memoranda and private documents, leaving no doubt as to the identification of the unfortunate deceased. Tho body was not much disfigured and identification Was easy. There was a mark of a blow on the left side of the face, which affords reason for belief that the unfortunate gentleman, before falling into the water, fell against the fender of his ship, by which he was rendered helpless and unable to give any alarm. Captain Stauion was 44 years of age and much respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife aud three children, now residing in Melbourne, to mourn his loss,”
Exteksivee Customs Seizure. —The police have succeeded in making another seizure of an illicit still and a largo quantity of material used in distillation. From information received, Ser-geant-major Molloy proceeded to St. John’s Redoubt, near Burton’s, Papatoitoi. Having approached a spot about two miles inland, ho saw an empty cask. Certain that he was on the right track, he penetrated a bush on the edge of a creek, where he saw a hut. He entered the structure, and found two- men asleep. He aroused them, and upon making search ho discovered a still in working order and about three hundered gallons of etuil' in a state of fermentation, which left no doubt as to their occupation. He at once took the men into custody, and brought the still into town, eventually depositing it at the Customs. The names of the two men are Me Lough alias McLeod, and l)aly alias Conuelan. The two men are well known Bendigo diggers.—New Zealand Herald, 28th November.
Maebiage Notices. —A western paper gives the following. Notices of marriages, where no bride-cake is sent, will be set up in small type, and poked into some outlandish corner of the paper. When a handsome piece of cake is sent, it will be put conspicuously in large letters; when gloves or other favors are added, a piece of illustrative poetry will be given in addition. When, however, the editor attends the ceremony in propria persona, and kisses the bride, it will 'nave especial notice—very large type, and the most appropriate poetry that can be begged, borrowed, stolen, or coined from the brain editorial.
