Illicit Distillation, it would appear, is getting a thing of common occurrence. From the laranaki News, of the 23rd ult, we learn that, on the previous evening, “ a dray laden with spirits was seized on the Carrington-road, coming into town. The purposes of justice would not be served by any further particulars at present, suffice it to say that two persons are already in custody, and the load of spirits, which was cunningly covered with wood, safely deposited in H.M.’s bonded stores. From Auckland, too, we hear of mischief brewing, for in consequence of information received. says the Cross of the 27th nit., “the sergeant-major of police and two officers of the Customs left town on Saturday for a place which it would not be proper to indicate more precisely than by saying it. is only a few miles south of Auckland where it was stated that illicit distillation was being conducted on a considerable scale.
