POVERTY BAY.

[keoii a coeeespondent.] 3rd November, 1865. I take this opportunity (by the Tawera) of writing to you to let you know that we have been obliged ■to abandon all our homesteads, and refuge close to the redoubt. We were hardly off before the Hau-haus were down, —taking possession of everything that we left; in fact, they entered Mr Dunlop’s premises before he had left. Mr Wylie went to his place yesterday to get a few things, .and while there they broke his doors, and began helping themselves. Mr Henry Torr went to his place, and there were about thirty of them inside his house, and would notallow him togo in. Mr Espey. and Mr Rob went to their places to get their wool and other things, and when they got there the Hau-haus were helping themselves to everything they could lay their hands upon. The Messrs Wrens and Greene have shared the same fate. All the Europeans here are without arms or ammunition. Several applied to Captain La Serre for arms, but he refused to give them as be had only got 50 stand and they were sent down for the Government natives, the Hau-haus that murdered the half-caste boy at Tokomaru and the Upper Wairoa natives are the chief instigators backed up by Anaru Matete, Ihaka Poaka, and the Uriweras. Old Raharuhi lias consented to their -chief prophet Nans a of the Wairoa to -do anything he likes, lamst now conclude as the Wail i* just dosing.
