WHAT THE NATIVE DEPARTMENT COSTS THE COLONY.

This is shown by the following returns which were lately laid before Parliament:— Statement of the expenditure for native purposes and schools for the years mentioned below, including expenditure out of reserved fund.

Several of the Courts from which fees have been received are asmuch European as native, and the expenditure is only as near as can be ascertained without au examination of the accounts, that would occupy a considerable time.
