RESIGNATION of the WELD MINISTRY!!
ARRIVAL OF THE RANGATIRA,
MR STAFFORD SENT FOR. SUPPOSED POLICY OF THE NEW MINISTRY. PROSPECT OF A NEW ELECTION. PEACE PROPOSALS REJECTED. MURDER OF ME BROUGHTON BY THE HAU-HAUS, AND HIS BODY BURNTAN INCOME TAX THREATENED. [Past of the following appeared in an extra issued on Tuesday last.] By the arrival of the s.s, Rangatira, Captain Mundle, early this (Tuesday) morning, we are placed in possession of our usual Southern files. The most important news to hand is from Wellington, and comprises the resignation of the Weld Ministry, and the important political results that may be expected to flow from it.
The Ministry had, from the time of its first defeat on Mr Golenso’s motion respecting the condoning of murders hy the rebels suffered several defeats on minor matters, and it is probable that the receipt of the important despatches fiom Mr Cardwell which we have before alluded to, caused them to decide upon their resignation. It would at least have been a more wise and dignified measure to have done so then, than to proceed in prosecution of a hopeless task. Their resignation took place on Friday, the 13th instant, in consequence of a virtual defeat the previous day on a motion by Mr Vogel, that the proceeds of the stamp duties be placed upon the same footing as the ordinary customs revenue. Their resignation was accepted, and Mr Stafford sent for, — W'ho has obtained leave to try until Tuesday (this day), the 17th, to form anew Ministry, and will no doubt be successful. As yet but little is known of tbe personnel of tbe new Ministry ; but Mr Pharazyn is spoken of as Postmaster-General, and Mr Grosbie Ward as Treasurer.
The policy of the new ministry is shortly stated to be: First-r-Eetrenchment. Mr Stafford proposes to reduce the estimates for the year by £250,000 to .£300,000 ; 2nd, an Income Tax, instead of Mr Weld’s stamp duties; —and will, if such is deemed necessary, dissolve and appeal to the electors on these questions. If this be done it will result in the most rapid election of membesr for the Assembly that the colony has yet witnessed, but it is probable that the new ministry will find itself supported by the house, and will consequently continue the session two or three weeks longer. Wellington is in a sad way on the subject, and loudly blames its members for not averting such a calamity.
The Resignation of the Ministry.— Yesterday the people of Wellington were clamorous in their expression on the conduct of such of the Representatives of the Province who either from gross lazines, carelessness or from interested motives, failed to support the Government on Wednesday night. It will be well for those gentlemen to retire into private life, for to them the colony is indebted for the disaster, that has occurred, for it is nothing else, when a Ministry a Self Reliant policy are overthrown on the motion of an agitator, with no policy whatever. —Independent, October 14.
