WELLINGTON.

Feom our Wellington files we extract the following items Proposed Improvement to the Citv. —By the BUI to repeal the Wellington Town Board Act, which has passed its second reading in th» Provincial Council, the coming Commissioners .will have power to enter into arrangements for lighting the City with gas, and for organizing a proper supply of water to the citizens. ; It is evident to all whose duties entail nocturnal ramblings, that the former arrangements if completed will~be an inestimable advantage, for when chaste Hina hides her face behind the clouds there is many a pitfall in the suburbs into which hapless pedestrians might stray.—lndependent. The Expedition to the East Coast.— The s.s. Ahnriri, Lady Bird, and Storm Bird, are expected to arrive in this harbor in the course of this afternoon dr to-morrow, morning, en route to tiie East Coast; but should it have blown as haVd yesterday at Wangauui as it did here, they could not get out to sea. The flotilla will have on board a large body of men belonging to the Colonial Forces, under the command of Major Brassey. The expedition will, on receipt of its final orders, proceed to the East Coast—the rendezvous being Hicks’ Bay, The Government are exerting them-. selves to put down faneticism, and the strong force now to be despatched to the hot-bed of Hau-hau-ism, will be a most efficient means to that end. The Ministry have certainly been aided by good fortune in their policy of self-reliance, as, on every occasion on Which Colonial Forces have encountered the rebels, they have been, if not entirely victorious, many degrees nearer the point than the Imperial troops. We hove no doubt Brassey and his braves will follow ,up Morgan’s victories, and effectually put a stop to anarchy, murder, and rebellion.—lbid, September 2. Hap hap Prisoners. —Two of the prisoners captured by Captain Fraser at Waiapu were brought down from Napier in the s.s. Queen on Sunday evening. Immediately on the arrival of the steamer alongside the wharf, the two rebels were handed over to the custody of the police, and by them conveyed to one of the cells adjoining the Police Station Lambton Quay. From there thsy were, removed to the Orderly Room of the Militia, yesterday, and afteiwards to the hulk Mauaknu. While lying in the police cell wo were allowed to see them. They both appeared strongly built men, and did not show any restlessness . at being visited, nor any disinclination to reply to questions put to them. They both expressed pleasure at seeing Mr Baker, the Interpreter to the Court, with whom they entered into conversation, replying without any hesitation to questions put to them, and in many instances volunteering information as to their past career. One of them confessed to having been sent to work on the roads by Mr Baker’s brother, when that gentlemen as performing the duties of Resident Magistrate in the district in which they were captured, That a number of other prisoners had been captured at Waiapu by Captain Fraser. We noticed that the taller of the two prisoners, had been wounded by a musket ball through the palm of the right hand, and on making enquiries we learned that the wound was received during the charge of Captain Fraser’s party on the pa, the capture of which we announced in a previous issue.—lbid. ;
