The Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1865.

The articles we give this day under the heading “ Spirit of the Press,” it will be seen fully hear out the opinions we have expressed on the abominabie measure the Masters’ and Servants’ Act; and it is satisfactory to us to find that, with the exception of our local contemporary, we have not been able to find a single journal of the colony that has one word to say in its favor. It is universally condemned, and we trust we may say this word for the Herald, that, had it seen the Act, not even the vote of Mr Ormond in its favor would have caused it to have awarded its approval $o such an unEnglish measure.

After the able manner in which the Act is exposed by our Canterbury contemporaries, there is little need for us to add anything to what we have said on a former occasion, furthejr than to request our readers to substitute, while readjng those articles, the words Hawke’s Bay, or the Colony, for Canterbury, for the sentiments expressed are as applicable to this province as to thst» and indeed are of the widest application to the whole colony, A better test of the fitness of a man to be popular representative than the action he took upon the second reading of this Bill, could not be desired; and we trust that not one who voted for it will be returned at the next election. Such a Bill could not be materially improved in committee, being wholly bad in its fundamental principles.
