New Advertisements. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HAWKE’S BAY TIMES. Sin, —Will you kindly allow me space in your paper to repudiate before the public statements made by certain persons, which seem intended to undermine my character and loyalty ? It has come to my painful knowledge that they, in a secret manner, have considered it behoved them to bring my name before the public as a traitor to my country and fellow-townsmen, by being connected with our enemy, the Hau-haus, in repairing their fire-arms, &c. I beg to state that it is false, and deem it behoves me to call upon those persons to come forward and prove their unjust and malicious accusation, otherwise keep their defamatory tongues silent upon the subject for the future, or I certainly will take steps to make them. It is far preferable to have to deal with highwaymen, or even Hau-haus, who give one an opportunity to defend himself, than with men who secretly and falsely endeavour to undermine one’s character, which is dearest to every honest man. Why some men look upon me with suspicion I know not, unless because I returned last May with my head upon my shoulders, contrary to the many false reports circulated about me. If, in any of my journeys, 1 by any chance meet with Hau-haus, my duty is plainly before me ; and I honestly endeavour to show them the folly of their religion ; that their struggle is wrong andone of desperation, which, if continued, can only ruin them; thus try and persuade them to forsake their false ways,—to lay down their arms, and make peace at any sacrifice, —and thereby save their race from inevitable destruction if not adopted. I have promised to lay before the public an account of my actions while absent from Napier last March to May. I already have done so in part, and will fully go into details when I deem my information will benefit the public. At present, lam certain it would not.—l am, &c., OSKAR BEYER.
