The Maoris.— A Warning. — Our attention lias been called to a “ row” that took place yesterday morning upon Gough Island amongst a gang of Maoris, estimated at from 20 to 40 in number. It commenced at about 4 a.m., and continued until about 6, when most of them seem to have taken their departure, and disappeared as mysteriously as they came. Another party, comprising most of the remainder, left early this morning, leaving an old woman or two, a tent, and a few potatoes. The row was so loud as to have been heard in the town as well as at the Barracks. It seems to have been a fight amongst themselves, a- we do not hear of any mischief done to the Europeans. Our aim in noticing this affair is to call the attention of the authorities to the unprotected state of the Spit—the chief avenue to the town from the Northern Districts. Wo are informed that there ts no arranged signal to be used by the police in case of danger, and the Militia have not a single round of ammunition for use in case of need. The treachery of the fanatics is well-known, and there is nothing to hinder any number of them from taking possession of the Spit, under the pretence of bringing in a few potatoes, &c., for sale. Means for the protection of the town should speedily be taken.
