THE ELECTION.

VICTORY OP THE OPPOSITION—BE-ELECXION OP MB COLENSO. According to advertisement the nomination of one person to represent the town of Napier in the Provincial Council, took place yesterday at noon, in front of the R. M. Court. There was a good attendance on the part of the electors, and up to the last moment it was generally believed that a Government candidate would be brought forward, but the event proved the contrary.

The Returning Officer having read the writ, in which we noted the word ‘deputy* before Superintendent—Mr H. Groom proposed, and Mr T. B. Harding seconded W. Colenso Esq. and no other Candidate being nominated, he was declared to be duly elected. The whole of the proceedings occupied but a very few minutes. In thus permitting Mr Colenso to re-enter the Council without opposition, the Government have shewn a wise discretion, preferring to submit quietly to the inevetable, rather than to suffer a more signal defeat than at the last election. Mr Colenso would certainly have been returned in spite of opposition, and such defeat would have hastened the crisis that is evidently impending.
