CANTERBURY.
We have our files to the 12th inst:— A man was killed by lightning on the 6th inst, an inquest held the following day. The following vivid account is taken from the report of the proceedings published in the Canterbury Press of the Bth inst:— Peter Littlejohn, deposed; I am a laborer, residing in Christchurch. On Thursday night I was proceeding with the deceased to MrSeager’s. Avonsida, and when about a quarter of a mile from Mr Senders residence deceased wished to turn back; but we afterwards reached the house and knocked at the door. I heard a clap of thunder, and saw a
blue ball of fire pass close to my head. On looking round I saw the door open and thought the deceased had gone in, and on feeling round I found the deceased lying in the doorway. He did not speak. The woman in the house brought a light, and we carried the deceased inside and tried to waken him, but unsucoessfuUy. A boy was sent for a doctor, and notice was given to the police. I did not see deceased struck by the lightning. Deceased was standing close to me at the time. The deceased was a married man, and lived at Addington.
