The Troops in Wanganui. —lt is apparently the intention of the authorities to station a considerable number of men at Wanganui for some time, as a contract has been entered into with Amos and Co. for the erection of twenty large huts, to be substantially constructed - of timber and corrugated iron. The whole of the materials were purchased in this province, and shipped on board the barque Inda, of whose arrival at Wanganui we expect daily to hear. —Southern Cross. Serious Accident at Pipieiki. —On the 24th ult., Mr Victor Dumas, one of the Taranaki Military Settlers, was giving instruction in the sword exercise, when he unfortunately forgot himself for a moment and was struck by a naked sword on the back of the right hand, and had nearly the whole of his fingers cut off. On the sth inst. mortification ensued, and it was feared by the surgeon, Mr Suther, that amputation of the hand would be necessary. . . x A Canny Scotchwoman. —The Greenock Advertiser states that a woman accosted some navvies who were about to embark at that port for Egypt and asked where they were going, and was told that they were bound for the “Sooz Canal.” “An’ whaur may that be ?” said the questioning dame. “.In Aegypt,” answered Pat, who most likely had not the vaguest idea where that country was placed on the globe. Death teom Crinoline.— On Wednesday week Ellen Sykes, aged 27, the wife of William Sykes, went to the chymical works of Mr. Carr, Enostrop, near Leeds, where her husband works, and ' while playing with her child in one of the rooms, her dress, which was greatly expanded by crinoline, was caught by some revolving machinery.. The unfortunate woman was drawn into the machinery, and her body was much crushed and lacerated, and one of her legs almost pulled Off. She died the same evening from the injuries she had received.^ — English. Paper.
