To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times.
. Sot,—ln the Herald of this day I see that Mr M‘Lean is reported to have said, during the discussion on the question of the enforcement of the law against squatting, in the Provincial Council on Friday last, that “an attempt had been made by one of his predecessors, to enforce the, law.” Now, Sir, can it be possible that Mr M‘Lean does not know that this is false ? If so, he is almost the only man in Napier that does not. There is abundant proof in existence, that the action taken by Mr T. H. Fitz Gerald, to which reference was made, was not any such “ attempt” but a mockery, intended “to prove an abortion and make leasing become more general than ever”—FitzGerald himself having openly confessed to the truth. If bis Honor can brio* no stronger argument than this against the enforcement of the law, then truly is he tryimr to uphold a bad cause.—l am, Sir, yours, ° ... Ahueibi. Napier, June 21, 1865.
