WANGANUI.

(From the Chronicle, May 31st.) Ben Nevts Stables.— We regret to learn that the stables belonging to the Ben Nevis Hotel were burned down on Friday morning shortly after three o’clock. Major Nixon, who happened to be in the house, awoke, and seeing some light at his bedroom window, looked out and found that tho stables were on fire. He awoke the inmates of the house, and along with Mr Dawson of the 18th, Mr Owen, and the landlord, went out and found all the doors locked. They broke open one with an axe, and found that the fire had run along the stables at the heads of the stalls, and that flakes of burning hay were falling on the heads of the horses, which had retreated as far 'as the halters would allow them. They succeeded in getting the horses out without injury, but had there been any wind blowing, or had Major Nixon been five minutes later in giving the alarm, this would have been impossible. The stable, which must have cost Mr Gieeson about £l5O and was not insured, was entirely destroyed. No light has been thrown on the cause of the fire, which is supposed to have arisen from a spark from a tobacco pipe, carelessly dropped among the hay. The Troops.— There is a rumor to-day that the troops that have just come in from the front are to return to meet Colonel Warre. Hanchtikei. —Wo hear that a new election for the Provincial Council is to take place in this district, Mr Halcombe having accepted some office. Attack by the Maoris. —Six of the Military Train going from Patea to Waingaororo were attacked on Sunday by about 100 Maoris, twenty of whom were mounted, and were obliged to return. The Races. —The entrances on Monday evening were numerous, and good sport may be looked for to-morrow and Friday.
