OTAGO.
Prom the Daily limes. Earthquake at Otago. —A correspondent at Caversham writes that being awake early Saturday morning, he felt a ‘quick but slight shaking’ of bis bed .; that he was satisfied that the motion was caused by an earthquake; and that there followed ‘ another shock much more severe, causing a quick vibration of the bed, and shaking the (stone) house, causing a jingling _of doors and dishes.’ He also noticed that there was no noise, and not the least wind at the time. The shock was distinctly felt at Port Chalmers by more than one person. Mr Murray, shippingmaster, described on Saturday morning that at about half past four a.m.. he felt his dwellinghouse distinctly vibrate, and the vibration was of such peculiar character that it at once occurred to him that it must have been caitsed by. an earthquake. The shock was not severe, but quite distinct from commotion which might bo caused by high wind or a passing object outside. Prom various other quarters we have received confirmatory accounts of the vibratory movement of the earth which occurred on Saturday morning.
